Duffy is reported to have returned home from Dubai for family reasons but suggestions he was in talks to cut short his season long move were said to be wide of the mark.

Celtic received heavy criticism for travelling to the Middle East during the pandemic.

The Ireland international has struggled to find his best form in the Scottish Premiership since joining Celtic last summer.

It's very unlikely the 29-year-old will return to Brighton as Graham Potter's Premier League strugglers have plenty of options in central defence, with Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster, Dan Burn, Ben White and Joel Veltman all competing for places.

Duffy has been linked to a reunion with his old Brighton boss Chris Hughton who is now in charge at Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

“I don’t see Shane going back to Brighton because he won’t get in the side," said ex-Albion and Celtic man Adam Virgo.

“Other clubs will take him in the Championship. I guarantee Chris Hughton, who had him at Brighton, would snap him up at Nottingham Forest.”

Joining Celtic was a dream move for Duffy last summer as he has supported the Hoops all his life. The move has not however worked out as plan and he produced another shaky performance when he was recalled to Neil Lennon's side for the crunch old firm clash with Rangers.

“He looked a bag of nerves against Rangers," said Virgo. “Unfortunately, he’s made too many mistakes which have led to goals."
