Gus Poyet urges Brighton to sign 'special player' in summer transfer window

Graham Potter’s men had not lost in their last six top flight outings prior to their late 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Monday night, but still boast one of the worst offensive records in the division, and have missed the seventh-highest number of so-called “big chances” this term – according to the Premier League themselves.

Albion’s top scorer this season has been Neal Maupay with seven goals, while Alexis Mac Allister, Solly March, and Lewis Dunk are his nearest challengers with three strikes each.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Poyet suggested that it is imperative his former club look to strengthen their attacking options in the coming months – and even claimed that current boss Potter will already have his eye on potential targets.

He said: “You would expect the manager to probably be already talking about what we need for next year because it’s clear.

"The numbers tell you. You need a striker, with all respect to Maupay.

"It's the most expensive position, and it’s the most difficult as well. You need a special player for the way you play, but you need someone who will put the ball in the net.

"You don’t have to look for too much quality, you need that player who finishes the actions, that is always in the box, and is going to have a better shooting accuracy than they’ve got at the moment.”
