'it’s about getting results' - Pundits debate Brighton and Hove Albion's style of play in comparison to Crystal Palace

Former Premier League duo Mark Schwarzer and Curtis Davies have suggested Graham Potter ditches his style of play and focus more on results ahead of the “nitty-gritty stage of the season”.

Brighton and Hove Albion peppered the Crystal Palace goal last night but somehow lost the game 2-1 following Christian Benteke’s injury-time winner.

In total, the Seagulls had 75% possession and a remarkable 25 shots at goal but it ended in a familiar story for Potter and co this campaign.

A number of the attacking stats place Brighton in the top half of the Premier League table but in terms of the actual league table, Potter’s side remains in the relegation picture.

The defeat to rivals Palace leaves Albion in 16th, four points above the drop zone, with 13 games remaining.

Schwarzer and Davies, appearing on Sky Sports’ Football Show, discussed Potter’s style of play at length.

"I don’t think you do (have to play glamorous football), you’ve got to find a balance,” said Schwarzer. “Obviously everybody would love to have an entertaining game of football every week.

"You’d love your team to play wonderful, attractive football and be praised for how wonderful you are to watch, however it’s about putting the ball in the back of the net.

“Everyone talks fondly about Brighton but look at the precarious position they’re in and that is purely because they haven’t had that cutting edge or the ability to put the ball into the back of the net, no matter how much possession they’ve had.

"Palace, they’ve got all the opportunities to be more attacking and be on the front foot and at times, yes, there can be a criticism to say they’re a little too defensive, however Roy drills his teams, they work very hard and are very difficult to break down.

"If you can do that each week and take your chances like they did last night, ultimately what matters is where you end up on the table.”

Davies, who now plays at Derby County, showed a little more sympathy to Brighton and Potter’s philosophy, referring to the 1-0 victory at Liverpool a few weeks back.

He added: “It’s difficult to say because recently they have beaten Liverpool away and they played really well at Liverpool.

"For us to be criticising them for losing this game against Palace when they adopted the same way and beat Liverpool, it’s easy for us to sit here and say that.

"I personally think that when you are having good performances more often than not, you should get results that back it up but at this nitty-gritty stage of the season, it’s about getting results.

"If we use Palace as the example, to grind that one out yesterday and come away with a win is massive for them.

"If you want to compare to contrasting style – Hodgson, whose team are quite defensive minded and play counter-attack against a Potter side that like to move the ball really well and try and play all this nice football, ultimately, Palace are sitting nine points above them in the table.

"You’d rather be in Palace’s shoes in terms of the table but I totally understand that if you’re building a project and that’s what they wanted with Graham Potter, then you maybe need to build on a foundation of playing football then eventually you’ll be able to be the team that steps into the top half."
