Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison has named the striker Brighton should sign to push them on to the next level.

And he's also claimed that the club should try and keep Danny Welbeck to boost their attacking options.

Brighton remained fourth bottom of the Premier League after a 1-1 draw against Champions League-chasing West Ham United on Saturday night.

Welbeck's lovely late goal looked to have sealed the win, only for Graham Potter's side to concede late again to deny them all three points.

It was a similar story for Albion, who played some nice football without having the killer instinct, and they have scored just 37 league goals this season.

Morrison, now a Sky Sports pundit, believes they need to break the bank to sign the Championship's top scorer Ivan Toney, regardless of whether the £30million-rated forward fires Brentford up through the play-offs this month – and offer Welbeck, out of contract this summer, a new deal.

Morrison said: "I like Brighton a lot, I think they are a brilliant team, they play really attractive football. They are just missing that killer instinct up front.

"Danny Welbeck is a very underrated player and if I'm Brighton, I'm keeping him for next season. He'll get you goals and he can play from that left-hand side.

"But they need a No 9, they need a natural striker. I know Neal Maupay is in there and he can get you goals, but they need someone who can get them 10 to 15 goals a season.

"I don't want Brentford fans to shout at me because I hope they get up through the play-offs, but someone like Ivan Toney, at Brighton, he gets goals for fun in the Championship, he'd be a great signing."

Toney cost Brentford £10million when he signed for Brentford from Peterborough United in August 2020, and has gone on to fire 31 Championship goals for the Bees this season – a league record – as they finished third in the table.

The 25-year-old had a spell at Newcastle United as a youngster but failed to make a Premier League appearance.

He has been linked with Arsenal, Leicester City and Everton in recent weeks.
