Plans on how to complete the Premier League 2019-20 season amid the coronavirus outbreak came-out over the weekend.

The Premier League is reported to have devised a plan that would see teams placed in self-isolation camps across the country in June and July.

The World Cup style camps, perhaps in the midlands and London, would see teams in hotels away from families. The plan is for multiple games behind closed doors and the screened on TV.

The Independent claimed all 92 remaining fixtures in England's top flight could be televised - as a 'TV mega event' - with multiple games available to watch each day.

It is said the government have tentatively backed the plan as they think it may help to unite the country during the prolonged lockdown.

There are concerns however, such as if one person contracts COVID-19 it could put the whole idea in jeopardy. Another is placing medical officials at 'non-essential events.'

Speaking last Thursday Brighton chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said,"From everything I've heard Sky and BT and the BBC in this country and our overseas broadcasters have been really very sympathetic to what is going on.

"But of course they are also needing and wanting desperately their live content which they pay us for.

"So clearly we've all got a vested interest in getting games back on when it's safe to do so. At the moment it's hard to see past this particular period.

"Money is one thing, people's health is quite another. As much as the financial side is very important to us because it reflects all of our jobs and sustains all of our jobs, we just need to hunker down, get through this period, keep people safe.

"In the background we can work through the contractual positions that we've got and try to get the games on when it's safe to do so."

A message from the Editor, Gary Shipton: Thank you for reading this story on our website. But I also have an urgent plea to make of you.

In order for us to continue to provide high quality local news on this free-to-read site and in print, please purchase a copy of our newspaper as well. With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on our town centres and many of our valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you buying a copy.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
