UEFA Nations League final for Propper, Jahanbakhsh on the scoresheet

It was a hugely successful night for Brighton & Hove Albion duo Davy Propper and Alireza Jahanbakhsh as the pair took to the pitch for their respective countries this (Thursday) evening.

Propper and the Netherlands reached the inaugural UEFA Nations League final thanks to a 3-1 extra-time semi-final win over England in Guimaraes, Portugal.

England went ahead on 32 minutes from the penalty spot. A poor touch from Mathijs de Ligt inside the box saw Marcus Rashford brought down by the highly-rated centre-back.

The Manchester United forward coolly stepped up to send Netherlands keeper Jasper Cillesen the wrong way and give the Three Lions the lead at half-time.

De Ligt atoned for his mistake by equalising for the Dutch on 73 minutes. The Ajax defender out-jumped John Stones and Kyle Walker to thump home a header from a Memphis Depay corner.

There was VAR-induced drama on 83 minutes as England had a goal ruled out for offside. A superb passing move saw Jordan Henderson slide the ball through to Jesse Lingard to toe-poke home.

After wild celebrations, VAR was used to check if the Manchester United midfielder was level with the Dutch defence but replays showed Lingard had strayed marginally offside.

The Netherlands then made it 2-1 mid-way through the first-half of extra-time after a horrific error from Stones. The Manchester City defender, attempting to perform a bizarre Cruyff turn on the edge of the box, had his pocket picked by Depay, and the Dutchman let off a stinging shot which was marvellously pushed away by Jordan Pickford.

Despite a fantastic save, the ball fell to the on-rushing Quincy Promes whose bundled attempt ricocheted off Walker for an own-goal.

Another defensive howler allowed the Dutch to add a third on 114 minutes. A wayward pass from Ross Barkley back to keeper Pickford was snuffed out by Depay in the area.

The winger squared the ball for Promes, who tucked home into an open goal.

Propper entered the game at the start of extra-time, coming on for winger Steven Bergwijn.

The Netherlands will face host-nation Portugal in the final on Sunday evening (7.45pm) to determine the winner of the first-ever Nations League.

It was also a good evening for Seagulls winger Jahanbakhsh as he was on the scoresheet for Iran in their 5-0 home friendly win over Syria earlier in the day.

Brighton's record signing opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, finishing well in the box following swift link-up play in the final third.

Mehdi Taremi's goal on 37 minutes gave the Iranians a 2-0 lead at the break, before the forward struck twice more on 57 and 77 minutes to secure his hat-trick.

Allahyar Sayyadmanesh added the fifth with a minute of the game to go to wrap up a convincing victory for the Asian Cup semi-finalists.

Jahanbakhsh was on the field for 62 minutes before he was replaced by Mehdi Torabi.

Iran travel to South Korea on Tuesday (12pm k.o.) for their final friendly of this international break.
