The north London club parted company with Jose Mourinho last month, and the Albion boss has emerged as a leading candidate to take over in the dugout on a permanent basis at the end of the season, according to reports.

Brighton have been embroiled in a relegation battle for much of the campaign, but despite their relatively lowly position, ex-Spurs midfielder Murphy believes that Potter could be an ideal fit for his former club.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I understand [the link] because of the way Brighton play.

“Similarly we were talking off air about when Tottenham brought in Pochettino. He’d only been at Southampton for five minutes before they took him.

“So they could go down that route again. It might surprise one or two.

“Tottenham fans generally want someone who has been there and done it before, but they’ve just gone down that road and it didn’t work.

“So I’m not surprised he [Potter] is linked with the job, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Murphy’s comments echo similar sentiments expressed by Paul Merson over the weekend.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, the ex-Arsenal man said: “I’m putting my neck on the line here – I’d take him at Tottenham.

"I think this manager’s good – I’d take him at Arsenal! If Arteta left tomorrow morning, I’d take him at Arsenal.

"What he does, he plays good football. From box to box, it’s good."
