The Seagulls picked up a crucial 1-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday to move five points clear of the relegation zone.

The win ended Brighton's seven-game winless run and Ryan admitted the squad were keeping an eye on other results on Saturday.

He said: "A few of the boys were talking about the results of the other games and I had a look (on Friday night) at who the other teams were playing and knew this game was going to be a vital one.

“As much as we look at them, we know we must control what we do ourselves.

“We wanted to come out and get the result today and we know if we’re going to continue to do that then we’re going to get the points we need to be safe and today was a step towards that.”

Ryan added Albion's sixth clean sheet of the season was crucial in the win: "For everyone it is a confidence boosting result.

“I felt we have been a bit loose defensively in the last few weeks and conceding far too many goals.

“I think we have given up opportunities far too easily and that is not in our identity as a club, certainly since I have been here, and from what the boys talk about in their records of clean sheets in the Championship.

"That was spoken about during the week after the Leicester game so we’re very happy to fix up that issue today.

“Like I say, when you don’t concede a goal then worst-case scenario you’re going to get a draw.

"But with the chances we have been creating recently I was confident we would score at least one and our good record at home here continues with this result.”
