Liverpool ran out 5-1 victors at the Amex last December and also beat the Seagulls 4-0 at Anfield at the end of last season.

This season, Brighton lost just 1-0 away to the Reds and their biggest defeat this season has been the 3-1 loss away to Everton.

Hughton said: "You're always looking for barometers of progress and achievement.

"For a club of our level, I think that's what it's going to be.

"Are we going to have big victories against teams? Generally no. But it's about how many games we can win, it's about the challenges away from home and can we improve our form?

"And it's certainly against the bigger clubs managing to stay in games. I can remember a couple in particular, Liverpool and Chelsea here last season, which were bigger defeats for us.

"That has been a challenge for us and at the moment, that's one we're managing to achieve."

Brighton sit 13th in the Premier League after finishing 15th in the top flight last season. Asked if he'd be happy if Albion finished where they are now, Hughton said: "We'd be delighted with that. Our aim is still about stability at this club and trying to make progress.

"13th at the end of the season would be progress from last season, there's no doubt about that.

"We still have to be realistic about where we are as a club and continue to try to develop and grow."
