Albion are in their second season back in the top flight and few pundits have mentioned them when talking about the battle to stay up.

Hughton says Brighton still have work to do to ensure they finish out of the bottom three but they are currently eight points clear of third-from-bottom Newcastle.

Albion's boss does not mind his side going under the radar and said: "It's something that suits us. Ultimately all we can do is try to put in the best performances we can.

"We've continually said in our progress, the most important thing for us is to have as big a gap as we can between us and the bottom three.

"If we're looking at what we see in the game now and the heights of the Premier League and the top teams, there's always going to be more focus on the top teams whether they are doing well or not and sometimes there's more focus on them when they're not doing well.

"To creep under the radar suits us because we know we've still got an awful lot of work to do."

Brighton travel to Manchester United tomorrow and although Hughton feels Albion's performances on the road have been better this season, he is frustrated results have not been better.

He said: "I think the performances have been better. What you'll always look for is that enough good performances will get you enough good results.

"Have the results been as good as what we would want? No they're not.

"Have the performances? Yes. We can only assess on the challenges we had last season and we're better away from home than what we were last season.

"Ultimately it's about getting as many points as possible and still for our level of club, points away from home are going to be more difficult, particularly when you go to the likes of Old Trafford."
