Solskjaer has won six successive games after taking over as caretaker manager when Jose Mourinho was sacked last month.

United have beaten Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Reading and Tottenham to move to within six points of fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League and reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Former United and Liverpool midfielder Ince has not been impressed with Solskjaer's start at United boss though and said: "The shackles are off, but that doesn’t mean that Ole is the right man for the job. I could have gone in and done the same thing, so could Steve Bruce.

“Anyone could have gone in and done what he has done, it wasn’t a hard thing to do to give those players freedom and improve the mood.”

Asked about Ince's comments in his pre-match press conference, Hughton said: “I don’t think it could be anybody. As a manager I know how difficult any game is, whether you are manager at Man United or Man City.

“Jurgen Klopp spoke last week about how difficult winning at Brighton was. We know how tough every game can be.

“I don’t think just anybody could have gone in and had the record he has now. I think you have to give him credit for that.

"In whatever way he has done that, he’s got results. They haven’t lost for six games and are on the back of a win at Tottenham who are a very, very good team. You have to give them a lot of praise for that.”

Hughton watched United win at Wembley against Tottenham last weekend and added: "They have been playing very well.

“The results speak for themselves. They have been able to win games and score goals and play really well.

“Any manager coming in after Mourinho couldn’t have done any more. The results and performances indicate that."
