The Bluebirds won 2-0 through goals from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Morrison to move to within two points of fourth-from-bottom Brighton, who have a game in hand.

Albion have now lost five successive matches and Cardiff captain Morrison said afterwards: "We're very happy. We knew today was a do-or-die game kind of.

"If we'd lost tonight it was looking bleak. The boys were fantastic, we were a little bit sloppy in the final third at times but every single one of us defended with their lives.

"We're delighted and we've given ourselves a chance. That was what it was about.

"We've still got four very tough games to come but we've given ourselves a chance which is the best we could have done tonight."

Brighton still have to play Wolves, Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal and Manchester City while Cardiff will face Liverpool, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Morrison said: "We're still third from bottom but we've given ourselves a chance. We've got Liverpool on Sunday which is going to be a very tough game.

"The two games after that (Fulham and Crystal Palace) are the games we're looking to get something out of.

"We're two points behind Brighton now and they've got some tough games coming up as have we. If we can put in the kind of performance we did tonight we'll give ourselves a chance.

"We're not going to give up until the final whistle on the last day at Manchester United away. Hopefully by then we've done enough and we're in the Premier League next year."
