Price: Win shows how good we can be

The magnificent FA Vase victory away to Chalfont St Peter illustrates just how good Rye United can be.

That’s the view of manager Scott Price after the Quarterboys stunned the semi-finalists of two seasons ago 2-1 in Tuesday night’s second round replay.

Price said: “It’s not like it’s a one-off game either. We’ve played them twice and apart from the first half on Saturday (when they trailed 2-0), for the other three halves we’ve been the better team.

“It just shows how good we are or how good we can be. In a one-off game we can’t be scared of anyone. Like I said last week, Whitehawk got to the semi-finals and Crowborough got to the quarter-finals.”

Rye’s odds to win the national competition have since been halved to 50/1 by bookmakers Skybet - the same as fellow Sussex County League Division One high-flyers Three Bridges, who they will visit in the next round.

“It’s a winnable game and it’s not like we’re going to somewhere we don’t know and get ex-pros playing left, right and centre,” continued Price, who also praised the strength of the squad as Duncan McArthur didn’t feature.

Victory over Bridges on Saturday December 4, incidentally, would take Rye further than they have ever gone before in the FA Vase. Their previous best was also round three in 2007 when they lost to Lowestoft Town.
