Seagulls draw Tottenham in Capital One Cup after finally reaching round four

Brighton and Hove Albion will play Premier League Tottenham Hotspur in the Capital One Cup after reaching the fourth round for the first time since the 1979-80 season.

The Seagulls will travel to White Hart Lane in the week beginning October 27 but it is not yet clear whether the game will take place on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

Brighton's hosts would no doubt prefer a Wednesday game. Spurs play at home to Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League the Thursday before, shifting their Premier League match with Newcastle United to the Sunday. A Tuesday game would therefore afford Spurs minimal recovery time before facing the Seagulls, although their manager Mauricio Pochettino may field a much-changed side regardless.

The Argentinian made 11 changes for this week's win over Nottingham Forest. Brighton face Rotherham on the preceding Saturday but do have an away game with Bournemouth scheduled for the Friday night, meaning the Seagulls would surely prefer a Tuesday night game.

The last time the Albion met Spurs in a competitive fixture was back in 2005 when a Richard Carpenter free-kick looked to have secured an FA Cup replay for the Seagulls before Robbie Keane broke the hearts of the travelling Brighton fans with a late winner. Brighton were arguably the better team that day and the thousands of supporters who will no doubt head to the capital next month will be hoping for a similar performance, albeit with a better result.

Mark McGhee was in charge that day but current Brighton manager Sami Hyypia is no stranger to taking on Spurs on their own soil. As a Liverpool player he made a number of appearances at White Hart Lane, although he admits he has mixed memories of the stadium.

He told Brighton's official website: 'I have some good and bad memories, most of the time bad. Hopefully we can change that.

'It's another challenge. We'll go there to play our game and try to win.'

Before then, however, Brighton have a run of important league fixtures, not least next Tuesday's home game with Cardiff City.

The match with the Bluebirds is the first of a series of midweek games included in the club's Floodlit Five ticket package.

The deal covers the home matches against Cardiff, Wigan, Leeds, Derby and Huddersfield and allows supporters to pay from just £25 per match rather than the full price they would have to stump off if bought individually.
