He started with South Malling Wanderers from U7s until U11s, at which point the club didn't have the facilities to take the team further.

The following season their team moved on to neighbours Premier, in Seaford, where the manager moved on and Ashwood was asked to be assistant to Kev Brooker. After a pleasing first season they won the division two title the following year but the next year in division one was a struggle.

The team joined up with Seaford Town where Ashwood had a year out as Andy Stiles and his team led the boys to a division three title. Stiles then moved on and Ashwood and Brooker took the lads to a second place and finished with the league title again in the final U16 year.
