A brace of second half goals from Billy Medlock gave the U’s a deserved 2-0 win at home to a high-riding Guernsey side which had picked up 16 points from its previous six games.

Wilson said: “I was very pleased. It was always going to be a difficult game playing a team that’s in form and I thought we stepped up to the mark a little bit.

“We asked the players to get up to the levels required and I was confident if we did that we would win the game. We got a bit of a lucky break with the first goal, but I thought we deserved to win the game. We need to beat the sides that are up there.”

Wilson was also pleased with the performance of debutant goalkeeper Harry Girling, who pulled off a couple of important first half saves.

“He gave the back four a bit of confidence straight away and he seemed quite assured really,” said Wilson, whose side now tops the form table with five wins out of six.

The result moved United up to seventh in Ryman League Division One South - just two points and two places outside the play-offs with between two and five games in hand on everybody else.
