We have to learn and get better - Brighton keeper Ryan

Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan says Brighton & Hove Albion have to learn and be better after Saturday's 1-0 Premier League defeat at home to Southampton.

The Seagulls suffered their fifth home defeat of the season after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's goal early in the second half took the Saints to victory.

Ryan felt Albion were again punished for giving the ball away and afterwards said: "We're disappointed and frustrated obviously.

"We pride ourselves on our form here at home and we were three on the trot and trying to ride that wave a little bit.

"Having been beaten in the way we were here today, it's just extremely frustrating. The way in which we have conceded goals…I can remember four or five goals just off the top of my head where we have just turned the ball over cheaply, been left exposed and wide open and been punished.

"When you are doing that to yourself at this level, making those mistakes that often, then you get punished. There have been circumstances where we haven’t been punished but put ourselves on the foot with cheap turnovers and the opposition hitting us.

"We have to learn from those moments and get better otherwise you find yourself in those situations like today when you don’t get what you should have got and don’t get a result."

Asked if it took Southampton's goal to spark Brighton to get going in the match, Ryan said: "I don’t know if going a goal behind is the determining factor with that. But there are two teams at the end of the day and they are both trying to play well.

"For one team to be constantly on the attack it’s almost unheard of with the exception of teams like Manchester City. That’s what we wanted to do, take advantage of being at home and get on the front foot."
