Wick superstore takes on the superstars

FORMER top-flight footballers are coming to Wick. . . to take on a team of supermarket workers.

The Lashings All Star XI will play a team from the new Morrisons supermarket in Wick at the Wick and Barnham United FC ground on Sunday, September 15, kick-off at 3pm.

Lashings’ line-up won’t be announced until nearer the match, but the squad of ex-professionals includes Perry Groves (ex-Arsenal), Luther Blissett (Milan, England and Watford), Matt Holland (Charlton and Republic of Ireland), Neil Webb and Clayton Blackmore (both Manchester United), Nigel Winterburn (Arsenal) and Kerry Dixon (Chelsea and England).

The football squad, an off-shoot of the famous Lashings cricket team of ex-international cricket stars, has raised thousands of pounds for charity and the Morrisons’ match is in aid of St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester and Jamie’s Wish.

Trevor Knell, warehouse manager at Morrisons, is helping to stage the game, which will be followed by a dinner at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel at Walberton.

Match tickets, price £5 in advance, or £7 on the gate, are on sale at Morrisons, the Gazette office in Beach Road, the Look & Sea Centre and Wick Information Centre.

For details of the dinner tickets or sponsorship opportunities for the match, call Trevor on 07956 600995.
