Henty delight at becoming international

SIDLEY United has an international in its midst after Paul Henty played for the England Fire Services team.

The full-back, one of The Blues' steadiest performers during a difficult campaign thus far, made his debut for his country on Wednesday, last week.

Henty, 22, played the first 70 minutes of the 2-1 win over The Army at The Military Stadium in Aldershot before coming off with a suspected torn hamstring that is likely to sideline him for around a month.

"It was a great experience," said the former St Leonards captain, "and a great honour for me. It was a bit of a surprise to be called-up in the first place and I didn't think I'd start. I thought I did alright, but I don't know yet whether I'll be selected again."

Coach Dave Amiet, who also manages the East Sussex team which Henty helped take to the final of the British Fire Services Cup last season, commented: "I was really proud when he (manager and former professional player Steve Halls) said that Paul Henty would be starting at right back. Paul played with some brilliant players today on both sides and didn't look out of place. He did himself and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service proud."

Henty, who gained selection by impressing in a trial match against the London Fire Service towards the end of last year, was performing alongside players from clubs such as Bridport and Harrow Borough.

Sidley manager Liam Barham added: "I'm made up for him because he's been our most consistent player this year along with Jimmy Watson. He's another one that we desperately miss when he's not playing and it's nice that one of my players is involved in something like that."
