Josh Gifford to help launch Fontwell book

LEGENDARY National Hunt trainer Josh Gifford will be at Fontwell's Southern National meeting a week on Sunday for the launch of a book on the history of the West Sussex racecourse.

Findon-based Gifford, who has written the book's foreword and will be signing copies, has enjoyed a long association with the course, which opened in 1924.

The 175-page book '“ by Jim Beavis '“ describes the track's history and tells the story of the people and horses who have made it a popular venue for a day at the races.

Among the stories of the course winners is that of Monaveen, the Queen's first winner as an owner. Other champions such as National Spirit, Beech Road, Baracouda and My Way de Solzen have also graced the Fontwell Park turf.

And course specialists such as Certain Justice and St Athans Lad rattled up 25 victories between them.

Illustrated with dozens of photographs, including many never before seen in public, the book will be essential reading for all fans of Fontwell Park.

Beavis has also written two other racecourse books, on Brighton and the now-defunct Croydon track.
