Knockout night of boxing

THE Southern Counties Boxing Championships could return to Bexhill next year following the success of the finals in front of a packed ATHA Showbar on Saturday night.

The showpiece event attracted a good crowd despite the absence of any local competitors.

Joe Pilgrim, secretary of Athletic Club Boxing, is hoping to repeat the experience next year. He said: "I'm going to try - I will do my best. The officials like to come down here because we treat them well.

"It was a very good night - everybody enjoyed it. It was a very, very good turn out. We've had the juniors here once, we've had the senior novices here three times and now the big one."

Eight high-class finals were contested after the preliminaries took place the previous week. The flagship contest in the super heavyweight division was claimed by M. Thomas (Woking) who saw off G. Potter (The Grange).
