The Seagulls brought in just Argentinian Alexis Mac Allister, who then returned to Argentinos Juniors on loan for the rest of the season.

Since the end of January when the transfer window closed, Brighton have collected just nine points from 11 games and have fallen to fourth from bottom in the Premier League, just three points above Cardiff.

Asked if there are any regrets about the lack of new arrivals, Hughton said: "No because if it was right at the time then I think we would have done.

"I think we all know how hard it is to sign players in January, fees and so on, and we had here players that have signed that still hadn't developed, hadn't had the seasons they wanted.

"You can bring a player in that by this stage still hasn't settled in, particularly if it's somebody coming from a different league. We can only do what we think is right at the time."
