Christmas lunch off menu - but all is not lost for golfers

Mannings Heath’s seniors had to do without their Christmas lunch this year – but fifty of them still got together for a keenly contested Christmas Cup  competition on a very sticky Waterfall course.

Competitors were restricted to three clubs and a putter but that proved no problem for Steve Parker and John Bailey. They both carded a very creditable 35 points.

Parker, playing off 12, just claimed the trophy on countback with captain Richard Lotinga third a point behind.

Parker and Bailey, partnered by Richard Pugh and John Gleaves, also took the team prize for the day’s best average, 32.

Peter Ireland, Peter Elliott and Roy Boud all won nearest the pin prizes for their tee shots on the par threes and Eddie Searles earned the Over 80s award.

The ladies had staged their Christmas Cup a week earlier but were back in action with a 14-hole fun competition that allowed participants three opportunities to replay a bad shot.

Making the most of her mulligans was Jakki Tidey who finished with 27 points to pip Meriel Jolley by a point. Tricia Robson and Rosemary Martin were joint third with 23.
