Cowdray seniors end strange golfing year on positive note

The annual cumulative competitions were finished early without any play in November. The Carter Trophy, which is based on points awarded to the top 10 players in the monthly Stablefords, was won by Brian Dormer with 21 points. Club Vice-Captain Dave Lucking was second with 20 points and Justin Chuter, also with 20, came third.

The Ken Young Eclectic was won by Chris Hutchings with a net 55.5 (taking 50 per cent handicap) with Phil Harrison second with a nett 58 and third was Andrew Douglas, also with nett 58.

This is the third year running Chris has won this competition, a remarkable achievement.

Because of restrictions on public gatherings, there was no Christmas lunch and prizegiving, although the trophies were on display after a nine-hole Stableford.

This was played over holes one to five and 15 to 18 ending back at the clubhouse. Fortunately, it was a glorious dry winter morning. The scores at the top of the field were close.

Winner with 21 points was Nick Upjohn. In second place was Mike Briant, third was Andy Douglas and fourth was Cliff Davis – these three players all scored 20 points so positions were decided on countback.

The annual meeting could not be held as a meeting so voting was collected by e-mail. The 2020 captain Terry Adsett was re-elected for a second year as his first was disrupted by the pandemic. Justin Chuter becomes vice-captain, Mark Kelly will be secretary and press man, Jon Fife will be handicaps secretary and Brian Symonds takes over from John Hall as competitions secretary. Rob Doney continues as treasurer.

Thanks went to John Hall who has shouldered a big workload organising the competitions so professionally during a difficult year. The seniors raised £5,700 for Terry’s charity, the Macmillan Nursing Unit in Midhurst, a commendable outcome.
