Six of the best lifts Sidley

SIDLEY United hauled themselves out of the Sussex Division One relegation zone after a clinical display of finishing easily accounted for bottom-of-the-table Southwick.

Two well-taken goals apiece from Dave Ward, Peter Baker and Keith Miles secured a 6-1 win and took them above Shoreham to fourth-from-bottom.

"I'm made up with it," said manager Liam Barham. "You've got to win these games against sides around about you and fortunately we did that today. They weren't the greatest team in the world, but I'm not taking anything away from my lads. We scored some great goals, got our finishing back today and hopefully that's going to springboard us into the run-in."

Sidley took just 11 minutes to open their account, Ward taking advantage of a mistake in the away defence to rifle an angled left-footed strike into the far corner of the net.

They almost doubled that advantage eight minutes later when a seemingly harmless hanging cross by Jimmy Watson was fumbled against the crossbar by the decidedly shaky Piers Walsh in the Southwick goal.

Graham Morris had a header awkwardly saved by Walsh before Baker nipped in between goalkeeper and a defender to slot number two into an empty net from the tightest of angles.

Baker then glanced home Steve Morris' cross at the end of a well-worked move down Sidley's right for his 19th goal of the season and Miles nodded in a 34th minute fourth goal - United's third in the space of five minutes - from Ward's centre.

The provider turned scorer of number five less than seven minutes into the second period, heading home Jimmy Watson's inviting delivery from close range to round off another slick Sidley raid.

Whilst Southwick were well short of the required standard for the county's top flight, they never gave up and pulled a goal back through a deflected Neil Harris shot on the hour.

Wayne Joseph was denied by Sidley goalkeeper Peter Newstead on two occasions and substitute Marcus Strevens hit the side-netting, but chances continued to come Sidley's way just as frequently.

The impressive Steve Morris blasted just wide after a dreadful Walsh clearance prior to Miles driving the sixth - and best - goal into the roof of the net on the volley from the edge of the penalty box with 20 minutes left.

Sidley, who gave a full debut to David Miller and ended the game with three Morrises on the pitch following the introduction of Carl for his first match back at the club, could have added to their tally when Baker struck the crossbar and Dave Carey missed a sitter.
