Why don't the players care?

LEWES boss Jimmy Quinn has reached the end of his tether with his under-performing side.

The Rooks are chasing an unprecedented third successive Ryman League promotion, but Quinn admits that some of the players 'don't give a monkeys'.

Last Saturday Julian Curnow and Jon Palmer were dragged off just 20 minutes into the clash at Walton, which Lewes drew 2-2, and the fiery Scot has threatened to pull the plug even earlier if he doesn't see the required passion from his team.

For this Saturday's crunch clash at home to Egham, which also marks the opening of the club's new stand, Jimmy initially planned to leave out any player who failed to train this week. However, when only eight first-teamers turned up for Tuesday night's session, the fuming boss was forced to shelve his plans.

'I'm totally disillusioned,' admitted Jimmy.

'I couldn't believe the performance against Worthing and then on Saturday we were even worse.

'I decided to go with three up front but if Warren Bagnall was still here he'd have done more than the three of them put together.

'I decided to make changes after 20 minutes and it would have been earlier if the subs had been interested in going on. These players have got to take stock of themselves - the attitude among some players is abysmal, and I was absolutely furious with the turn-out for training.

'One way or another we will have some passion in the team on Saturday. The reason why we've been so successful in recent years is because we've been the hardest working team, but that's gone out of the window and I can't put up with it.

'Even if we've used all our subs on Saturday I'll take anyone off who's not giving their all. I'd rather play with ten men - it's that simple.

'I've always said it's better to play with ten men trying than have a full team with only half of them giving it a go.

'The players should take a leaf out of Marc Cable's book. He's been struggling for a few games with a virus and lots of knocks but he gives 110 per cent, and other people, who are in the best of health, are putting in very little effort.

'All is not lost by any means if you look at the table, but some of them seem to have given up the ghost.

'Bognor beating Carshalton was the worst possible result. To be honest I don't think we are going to get enough points off our own bat, we keep having to look for others to slip up and it's very hard playing catch up. We've left ourselves too much to do.'

Michael Birmingham scored Bognor's only goal on Tuesday night in the crunch clash with Carshalton at Nyewood Lane.

The result leaves Lewes five points adrift of the top two but with a game in hand.

However, nothing less than victory over Egham Town tomorrow (Saturday) will do.

Meanwhile, Bognor visit Met Police, Carshalton travel to Worthing and Dulwich Hamlet entertain Ashford.
