Hastings online recital series welcomes Garam Cho

The short recitals premiere every Friday evening on Facebook at 7pm and at hastingsinternationalpiano.org.

This week the concert on Friday 26th June will be with the 2015 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition prize-winner Garam Cho.

The programme will be G.Gershwin / Earl Wild – Etude No.4 ‘Embraceable you’; F.Liszt – Sonetto 104 Del Petrarca; and F.Chopin- Ballade No.4 in F Minor Op.52.

Spokeswoman Dominika Hicks explains: “In these times when the livelihood of our musicians is at risk, with engagements being cancelled and studies on hold, this series aims to provide an income to the young competition prize-winners as well as offering Hastings Piano supporters and the wider public something to look forward to at the end of the week.

“The concerts are free to view, but viewers are able to make a voluntary donation to Hastings International Piano Engagement Fund or choose to join as a Friend whilst watching. These donations help to continue the organisation’s work supporting young pianists as well as engagement projects offered to the young people of Hastings and the surrounding area. This includes free tickets to events as well as workshops, school visits and inspirational talks from visiting artists.”

Pianist Garam Cho is regarded as one of South Korea’s most thrilling young classical stars. Born in Seoul, she began playing piano at the age of three, and later enrolled at the prestigious Sunhwa Arts School. She studied from 2004 to 2008 at the Seoul National University, the best university in Korea. She furthered her studies in Germany, earning her master of arts in piano and “Konzertexamen” (highest distinction) from Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler under the tutelage of Prof. Gabriele Kupfernagel, who had studied with Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva.

In 2012 she received a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) Prize, and in 2014 received the Elsa-Neuman-Stipendium (scholarship) des Landes Berlin and Prize of Berlin.

She won the 2013 Delia Steinberg International Piano Competition in Spain, in 2015 she won Second Prize in the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition in England and the Berliner International Piano Competition in Germany and in 2017 she won the Windsor International Piano Competition in UK.

As a recitalist and soloist, Garam Cho performed in Berlin, Seoul, London, Hastings, Thessaloniki, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan and Glasgow.

In 2015 under the baton of Brian Wright, Garam Cho performed Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in Hastings. She also appeared as a concerto soloist with the Dessau Philharmonic Orchestra at the ‘Classic Open Air Festival’ in Berlin, which has a 25 year history.

Garam performed Grieg Piano Concerto with Debut Orchestra at Seoul Art Center Concert Hall, the biggest hall in Korea. In 2017 she had a great success with the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2 with the Konzerthaus Orchestra led by Nodoka Okisawa, sponsored by Kultur Radio in Germany.

From 2011 to now she has had over 30 concerts with the Korea W Philharmonic Orchestra led by Namyoon Kim, including sold out Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 concert in 2019.

In 2020 her Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No.5‘ Egpyt’ at Seoul Art Center Concert Hall was broadcasted live on Arte TV in Korea.

Garam Cho taught at Hochschule fuer Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin after graduating “Konzertexamen” in 2016-2017. In spring 2018, she began teaching at ‘Hasei’ University and ‘Sejong’ University in Korea. She is also active as a music columnist, her “Pianist Garam Cho’s Classic Essay” published a series of colum in a “Contemporary Music Newspaper”.
