Meet the printmaker behind Brighton and Hove Artists Open Houses brochure image

“It starts with a drawing and it goes from there really,” she said.

“I love the technical analogue technology, which is why I do the casettes and cameras.

“What I like with lino cutting is that it can be wonkier and imperfect, whereas with computers you are trying to create perfection but with a lino it can be a bit different.”

A selection of Hannah’s work will be on display as part of this year’s Artists Open Houses in Brighton and Hove.

Running from May 4 until the 26 Hannah will be opening the doors to her own home.

She said: “Last year my partner Georgia Flowers and I decided to do open houses at ours.

“I was a little nervous as I like my own space and to just work so the thought of opening my home to strangers was a little daunting, but it has been great.

“People want to talk to you about the work and find out more.

“I am artist who likes to do my art whereas Georiga is great at curating we are a great team.”

Hannah’s work can also been seen on the brochure cover and the original linocut will be on show at the Old Market exhibition. There is a limited edition of ten prints available as well from Hannah.

At her home (12 Scott Road which is on the West Hove trail) Hannah will be showcasing her own prints alongside a sculpture in the garden, mixed media artists, painters and printmakers.

“We wanted a mix of people that had that contemporary modern art feel that Georgia and I like,” she explained.

“We have 14 artists all together. People that compliment each other.”

For AOH Hannah has produced some new work for people to enjoy.

“I also do paintings as I wanted a break from the lino printing so that has been nice to do something else.

“I try to do something new for AOH as we have people coming back so it is nice for them to have something different to look at.”

Last year Hannah’s linocut print ‘Cassette Tapes’ was selected for the 250th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, curated by Grayson Perry.

She was one of three artists chosen by the BBC to be filmed for their documentary about the RA Summer Show.

After being selected, the entire edition of ‘Cassette Tapes’ sold out at the private view.

This year her camera print has also been shortlisted at the Royal Academy Show

“You send a digital file and it gets whittled down, then you take an actual print to the Royal Academy so the judges can view the original.

“It is an amazing thing to be included in something like that.”

Hannah studied Graphic Design at Brighton University before becoming a full-time printmaker in 2018.

Her work captures everyday events and artefacts of modern life, with particular attention to social events and personal pastimes. She uses vivid colours and bold shapes to create detailed, textured prints which have a sense of movement and strong graphic quality.

Artist Open Houses sees over 1,500 artists and makers exhibiting their work in artists’ homes and studios – providing a snapshot into the world of the city’s artists.
