Emmeline Pankhurst statue unveiled by Brighton-based sculptor

Hazel Reeves was commissioned to create the statue for St Peter’s Square in Manchester – the famous suffragette’s hometown – to mark 100 years since the first women won the right to vote.

She was joined by Emmeline’s great granddaughter Helen Pankhurst at the unveiling on Friday, December 14.

If a funding campaign is successful, Ms Reeves has also agreed to create a statue in Brighton of suffragette Mary Clarke, Emmeline Pankhurst’s sister and an organiser for the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the city.

The Mary Clarke Statue Appeal is chaired by Jean Calder and supported by Briony Goulden, a great great niece of Mary Clarke.

Ms Reeves is an award-winning figurative sculptor who created the Sir Nigel Gresley statue at King’s Cross station in 2016, and the bronze figure of Sadako Sasaki in Wales.

Last year, Ms Reeves was awarded the commission to celebrate in bronze the lives of women biscuit factory workers – the ‘Cracker Packers’ – from the Carr’s (now McVities) factory in Carlisle. This was unveiled on International Women’s Day 2018.
