First plinth sculpture to encapsulate Hove - with the help of residents

Hove residents are urged to help sculpt a new artwork set to be displayed on the seafront, by choosing objects that reflect the area they live in.

The Hove Plinth project will see sculptures on display at Kings Esplanade in Hove. The first sculpture to grace the plinth is Constellation by Jonathan Wright.

Hove Plinth organisers said: "The sculpture is an imaginative celebration of our community which puts Hove in its own solar system. Wright’s design is part mechanical model of the solar system, part film camera and part ship’s compass. The most popular landscapes and iconic images associated with Hove will orbit the system rather than planets.

"We need the community's help to choose the objects that go on the sculpture.

"We want to have your views on the most exciting, relevant or significant places and landmarks in Hove that make it a special and interesting place."We need your suggestions for objects that communicate why people love to live in Hove and why it is a place to be proud of. We want the sculpture to communicate your love of Hove, why it is special to you and 'What Makes Hove Hove'."

A series of morning and afternoon workshops will take place, in collaboration with the Hove Museum and Brighton Museum and The University of Brighton and Hove Civic Society.

The key objective of the workshops is to make a selection of objects for the sculpture which are relevant to the local community. Residents will need to bring a photograph (either digital or printed) displaying the suggested object to include in the final sculpture.

There will be additional workshops on Tuesday, October 31, from 10am to midday, and 2pm to 4pm.

Inspired by the Fourth Plinth in London, Hove Plinth will exhibit a changing programme of sculpture. Major works will be displayed for 12 to 18 months after which some will be moved to permanent sites.

Hove Civic Society raised £40,000 in a crowdfunding campaign, which alongside £16,000 Arts Council England funding, will be used to build the plinth and create the first sculpture.
