Vigils in memory of Manchester victims to be held in Brighton

A series of vigils have been organised in Brighton and Hove, to remember those who were killed or injured in yesterday's attack (May 22).

Police said 22 people had been killed and dozens injured in the devastating attack at Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande gig last night.

The One Voice partnership - a group involving the council and faith groups in the city - said a number of memorial events will be held in Brighton and Hove tomorrow (May 24).

At 10.30am, there will be a one minute silence outside Brighton Town Hall and Hove Town Hall, for councillors, staff and residents of the city.

At 6.30pm a ‘We Stand Together’ rally will be held outside Brighton Town Hall, organised by The Hummingbird Project.

Speakers will include city councillor Emma Daniel, Green candidate for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, Richard Williams from Sanctuary on Sea, and Elaine Ortiz from The Hummingbird Project.

At 7pm to 8pm a vigil will be held at Hove Methodist Church by The Interfaith Contact Group, which has set aside its regular weekly prayer circle, honouring those who have suffered both directly and indirectly from the tragedy that took place in Manchester last night.

And another vigil will be held from 8pm to 9pm, at St Luke’s Prestonville, Old Shoreham Road, Brighton.

A statement from One Voice said: “The Brighton and Hove ‘One Voice Partnership’ reaffirms that communities, council and police stand together in solidarity in our response following the tragic incident in Manchester yesterday. We do not tolerate violence against innocent people, wherever it takes place. Together we speak with one voice against extremist perspectives and terrorist actions in the city and elsewhere.

“The incident following the concert in Manchester Arena yesterday has deeply saddened us all. We send our deepest sympathies to the families of those who have lost lives, those who have been injured, and all affected communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

“It’s now even more important for all our communities to demonstrate that we will not let any terrorist action divide us and continue our great tradition of unity and respect for all. We stand firm that these acts of violence and hate must not go any further. We must look out and care for each other and ensure that individuals and communities are not singled out in our city.”
