With the Easter bank holiday weekend upon us, it’s a great time for wannabe dog owners to take time searching local shelters for their perfect pet. Take a look at some of the dogs who are searching for homes in Sussex.
The Easter holidays provide a great time to browse local shelters, meet the dogs searching for families and even potentially settle one in at home if you find your perfect pooch.
Dogs Trust Shoreham is one of many rescue centres in our county doing brilliant work to look after four-legged friends without homes.

5. Zara - Borzoi between two and five years old
Dogs Trust Shoreham said that if Zara were a human, she’d be a princess. The beautiful Borzoi is a 'gentle, elegant lady' who turns heads wherever she goes. However, Zara isn’t always fond of such attention, as she likes to get to know people at her own pace and is particularly apprehensive around men. Nonetheless, she has been making great progress and has built strong bonds with some of the male staff at the Shoreham centre. Due to her sensitive nature, she would best be suited to a quieter home environment, where her owners are around a lot of the time, and where the youngest family members are of secondary-school age. She must be the only pet in the household but is happy to live nearby horses or livestock. A garden of her own is essential. Photo: Dogs Trust Shoreham
6. Harry - Lurcher
Harry is an energetic Lurcher, seeking equally active adopters who could offer him consistency and routine, as well as an enriching life full of adventure. He adores the company of his favourite humans so would like a family who could dedicate lots of their time to him, while supporting him with his training. Harry will need to be the only pet, in a home where the youngest family members are in their older teens. It is essential that he has a garden of his own to burn off some steam and enjoy off-lead zoomies. Photo: Dogs Trust
7. Jake - six year old Border Collie cross
Dogs Trust Shoreham said Jake is a 'super special boy with a sensitive soul'. He can feel overwhelmed when there’s lots going on around him, so will need an adult-only home with minimal visitors. His ideal home would be somewhere relaxing, situated in a quiet location, away from any fast roads or the hustle and bustle of busy neighbourhoods. While Jake is unable to walk next to traffic, he is great at travelling in the car, which is ideal if needing to transport him to walks in quieter areas. He needs to be the only pet at home but is currently working on building his confidence around other dogs, as he came to the centre feeling very apprehensive around them. He is still unable to walk where there are lots of dogs roaming but has successfully begun to socialise with a familiar friend at the Shoreham centre, showing that he has lots of potential to continue making progress. A garden of his own is essential, so that he can enjoy his daily exercise on days where longer walks may not be an option. Photo: Dogs Trust Shoreham
8. Jasper - 13 year old Crossbreed
Jasper is a sweet Crossbreed with a sensitive side. A little unsure when making friends with new people, he prefers a gentle approach without too much pressure. He would love to find a relaxing retirement home, with understanding adopters who could allow him to settle in at his own pace. Jasper isn’t used to being left alone and tends to find alone-time challenging so would prefer a multi-carer household, where there is always someone around to keep him company. While he is happy to mooch in the company of some canines of a similarly calm-character to his own, Jasper can be unsure of others, and especially if they are overly lively in nature. He is looking for a home as the only pet and it is essential that he has a garden of his own. Photo: Dogs Trust Shoreham
