Knockaert received a large ovation from Brighton supporters before Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham and he afterwards said: “It was nice. I know these fans really well and they’re behind me.

“I received a lot of messages and I really appreciate it – I also got a lot of messages from people who are going through the same thing.

“It’s nice for me to be able to help them and I think in life everyone can help one another, that’s what I was trying to do.

“A lot of people were probably surprised because nobody knew about it, but it felt like the right time for me to tell people.

“The most important thing was to help other people who are going through a similar situation, that’s why I did it.”

Looking back at the game as a whole, Knockaert said: “We’re a bit disappointed because we didn’t play the way we know we can in the first half.

“We were a bit deep and then conceding the penalty didn’t help us – but we came in at half-time and talked about how we needed to press higher.

“We did that and had chances in the second half – I had a chance and if I scored, it would have been a different game, I feel like we could have got something from the game today.”

Brighton sit 13th in the Premier League table, with five points after six games but have already played four of the teams currently in the top seven.

Asked about the Seagulls’ start, Knockaert said: “I think we’re doing well. We’ve already played three big teams and against the three of them, we did really well.

“It’s a good platform for us and we need to keep going.

“You can’t really blame us for losing against a team like this (Tottenham), especially when you watch the game and see we had chances to come back.

“It’s always tough to play against a team like this. We tried our best and I think we’re doing well and just need to keep going.”
