After a torrid week that saw Albion fall to consecutive home losses against Bournemouth and 18th-place Cardiff City, the Seagulls produced a tenacious display to pick up a point and move three points clear of the Welsh club and the drop.

Hughton said: "We knew it was going to be very, very difficult against a side that have had a good season.

"They've got a lot of gifted players, so we had to show our work ethic and determination. If we had shown anything less, we wouldn't have got a result today.

"I'm really pleased with the reaction and hopefully we can take that through to the rest of the season.

"I just hope we can take value from the manner of the result."
